The Hungry Tide By Amitav Ghosh.
"The Hungry Tide" is a novel written by Amitav Ghosh. This is his sixth novel. It won Hutch Crossword Book Award for fiction in 2004.

The story in this book is taking place in Sundarbans, India where the lives of three people from different worlds collide. Sundarban is a tiny island of Bay Of Bengal off the easternmost coast of India.

For the people living in this island life is extremely precarious. Unrest and eviction are constant threats. Deadly tigers (Royal Bengal Tigers) attacks are very common on this island. And tidal floods that rise and surge over the land any time without warning leaves devastation in their wakes.

Piyali Roy, a young American biologist of Indian descent comes in search of a rare species of endangered river dolphins, Orcaella brevirostris.

Piyali`s journey begins with a disaster, as she was thrown from a boat to crocodile-infested water, and rescue comes in the form of a young fisherman, Fokir.

Fakir is illiterate. Piyali and Fokir have no language between them. Piyali engaged Fokir to help with her research and find a translater in Kanai Dutt. Kanai is a businessman from Delhi, whose idealist aunt and uncle are residing in Sundarban for a long time.

The Morichjhanpi massacre of 1978-79 when Govt Of West Bengal, evicted thousands of Bangladeshi refugees who settled on the island form a background for some part of the novel.

The novel digs out tropics like humanism and environmentalism, especially when they come to conflict of interest of each other.
