This is a story of a rural Bihari boy`s journey of winning over a girl he loves. This is the sixth novel of Chetan Bhagat published in 2014. The novel has also been published in Hindi and Gujrati.

"HALF GIRLFRIEND" according to Chetan Bhagat is a unique phenomenon in India. Where a young boy and girl are not clear about their relationship status with each other. The boys think he is more than a friend with the girl and the girls are not actually his girlfriend. So the term HALF GIRLFRIEND is used in the novel because this is what most men get in India.

PROLOGUE.


One day Mahadev Jha a boy from Dumroan, a rural village of Bihar comes to Chetan Bhagat. He came with some left behind diaries of his girlfriend which he believes has died. The next morning the author called up the boy to hear the story.

Story of Half GIRLFRIEND.


Madhav starts describing the trouble he has to face to enter S.T Stephens as his English was not good. However, he finally got through sports quota. The beautiful rich girl Ria Somani from Delhi, who was also selected through sports quota. Madhav and ria became a friend as they play basketball in college campus every evening. When Madhav asked Ria for a date out she refused and asked him to be just a friend. Even one day Madhav calls Ria to his room and demand to get physical with him which Ria refused. For which Madhav in anger said "DETI HAI TOH DE NEHI TOH KAT LE". And thus Ria parts friendship with Madhav and tells him not to talk with her anymore.

About six months later when Madhav again tries to contact Ria, Ria invites him to on her marriage. She is going to marry her childhood friend Rohan. After marriage Ria settle in London. Madhav came back to his home town Dumraon, to help his mother who runs a village school. As the school has no proper infrastructure due to lack of funds, Madhav contact local MLA who informed about Bill Gates's visits to the village schools in Bihar. Madhav decided to convince Gates to fund his schools. For that, he needs to prepare a speech in English but as he now not good in English he decides to join a spoken English class. In the course of this struggle, he came across Ria. She is now a divorcee, she suggests Madhav read CHETAN BHAGAT s book to grow his English speaking power. She and Madhav together make the speech. During this time Ria visits Madhav`s village and meets his mother.

They were successful in raising the fund for the school. But after the speech, Ria disappears leaving a letter to Madhav. The letter states that Ria has cancer and has only three to survive. Riya confessed her love for Madhav in the letter. Madhav tried to track her down but found that she has cut all relations in India before disappearing. Three years later after this Madhav gets a diary from Ria s ex-roommate which reveals that Ria is alive and she had facked her cancer because Madhavs s mother who does not wants her son to marry a divorced woman.

After this Madhav arranged some funds and flew to Newyork in search of Ria as he remembered Ria's dream to be a singer in a famous hotel in Newyork. After searching for three months he finds her at the CAFE WHA. They reconcile and get married. The Novel ends when Chetan Bhagat visits Dumraon after three and a half years and finds both Madhav and Ria successfully running the school and they have a son.
