India After Gandhi: The History Of The World`s Largest Democracy. By Ramachandra Guha.
"India After Gandhi: The History Of The World`s Largest Democracy" is written by Indian historian Ramachandra Guha. The book was published by Harpercollins in 2007. It tells the history of India after it gained independence from The British Empire on August 15th, 1947. This book was on Book Of The Year list by The Economist, The Wallstreet Journal, and OutLook. The book also won Sahitya AcademyAward for English in 2011. This book was one of the best nonfiction books of the decade (2010-2019) as per Hindu.

In November 1997, Peter Strauss, then head of Picador, met Guha and suggested that he write a history of independent India. Strauss read an article by Guhar in the Oxford Journal Past and Present. He suggested that as the Indian historians closed their accounts with Indian independence in 1947, scholarly analysis of post-independence modern history would be of interest. Guha signed an agreement in March 1999, with a book delivery date set for March 2002.

At the time of writing the book, Guha consulted the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library with personal papers of several important Indian personalities as well as newspaper records. The personal papers of Indian independence activist and politician C Rajagopalachari and Indira Gandhi's editor-in-chief PN Haksar from 1967 and 1973 were particularly effective in Guha`s research. Guha passed his final draft to Strauss in 2006 and the book was published in 2007.

The book India After Gandhi was translated in Hindhi Language by India Today journalist Susant Jha. And was named as "Bharat Gandhi Ke Baad".
