The Illicit Happiness Of Other People By Manu Joseph.
"The Illicit Happiness Of Other People" is a darkly novel written By Manu Joseph. This is a story set in the 1980s Madras and based on a Malayali Family.

Unni Chako, the elder son is a talented graphic Novelist and he has committed suicide at a young age. Though it was not clear to his parents whether it is a suicide or an accident when the incident occurred. But three years later Joshep, father of Unni finds a comic strip drawn by Unni. And he realizes that he could actually find the reason for his son`s death through this comic strip. So she starts his search.

The Malayali Christian family is a dysfunctional family because Oushep`s wife Mariamma wants him to die and she always plots to kill him. Thoma the younger son is pining for the love of Mythili Balakrishnan, a beautiful neighbor and yet struggling with all sorts of fear and insecurities.

The major part of the novel is written on Ouseph's investigation of his son's suicide. The author Manu Joseph creates an array of outstanding characters. They are Unni`s classmates who range from intelligent to clueless and the lost, a nun, a neuroscientist, eccentric, cartoonist, and a paedophilic teacher. Ouseph interviewed all these people during his investigation and this part was the best part of the story. It really works well as a mystery novel but there is a lot more to do it than Ouseph`s investigation.
